Most of us are pretty good at being mean to ourselves. Voices we might’ve heard from haters, media, or even caregivers shape the parts of ourselves that we carry through life. One popular type of therapy, Internal Family Systems, proposes that healing, growth, and recovery come through learning to honor our true self rather than fragments of selves that have split off to serve functions like protecting or reacting. One of the tricky parts, though, can be figuring out just when we’re hearing the voice of our true self versus those so familiar mean, fearful, or confused voices.
